Single Parent Power

We are delighted to have been successful gaining funding from the National Lottery Community Fund for the Single Parent Power project. The aim of Single Parent Power is to provide early help to unemployed or inactive single parent families that are experiencing barriers preventing them from moving towards, or gaining, employment. Our experienced Key Workers will offer a programme of support needed to address any barriers single parent families may be facing, including 1:1 help and guidance with employability skills. Our Counsellor/Wellbeing Worker offers support around mental health and wellbeing to all participants.

If you have any enquiries regarding the project please contact Jenny Harris on 0113 8245422,

Case Study

When I first came to Community Learning Partnerships, I was on a programme called Stronger Families. Emily then approached me to get involved in Single Parent Power for support. I was going through loads at home which took a toll on my mental health and my confidence was really low.

I was assigned Emily as my support worker, we had regular meetings and when I was ready to look back into studying but not go out Emily helped with getting me a college course I could do from home. Also looked at loads of different things that benefitted me where I didn’t feel like I was being forced into doing something, she took my home life into consideration.

From changing to Single Parent Power I now feel like I’ve come so far and changed so much with the help and support Emily has provided. I’m now involving myself in little classes run by SPP such as the art and craft sessions where I meet other parents. I also went to the Christmas party, where my children were able to have fun and went on stage with the magician. I have also agreed to work with the counsellor for extra support where I need it.

I volunteer on the parent focus group, contributing ideas that I think may help the programme and families. At Christmas time, I volunteered on the focus group and I went in for a few days to help with wrapping and organising the donations to make presents for families. I have also attended anxiety group sessions with Cherise the Counsellor to see how we can manage anxiety in our children. I have done things I would never of seen myself doing back to when I first joined due to confidence and not liking to meet new people but that’s now in the past and I love been able to get out and actually meeting new people now.

Emily has helped me with practical support too. My washing machine broke I was totally stuck Emily helped me get a new on and also she helped me to get a birth certificate as ID for courses.
If I’m ever short or stuck leading up to pay day Emily has previously helped with gift vouchers too for the local supermarket so me and my children are not going without.
Last year to this year I’ve struggled with social services as it knocked me back a bit but Emily came to meetings with me so I wasn’t alone and supported me the whole way through to the social worker signing off. She is always willing to help physically and mentally and I couldn’t of asked for a better support system.
I’m currently looking at starting a customer service and you course next week which Emily had got me through to and I’m super excited. She has made sure I spoke to the teacher beforehand so that I feel comfortable attending. I genuinely don’t feel like I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for the support I have received.
