What do we ask of our volunteers?

To become a reading volunteer, we ask that you can:

  • Visit one of our nominated schools for an hour a week, plus travel time
  • Commit for a school year or at least a full term (approximately 12 weeks)
  • Complete the necessary training
  • Provide children with individual reading support
  • Foster a positive attitude to literacy and learning
  • Act as a positive role model

 

You will also need to:

  • Have a passion for reading
  • Have a desire to support children’s education and achievement
  • Believe in the importance of literacy
  • Be fluent in English and a competent reader
  • Enjoy spending time with children
  • Be patient, encouraging and enthusiastic
  • Be a good listener and communicator
 

In order to apply for the role:

  • You will have been a resident in the UK for the last 2 years
  • You agree to undertake a Disclosure & Barring Service enhanced check and be able to supply 2 references.
